The Jewish Community Vienna (IKG – Vienna Israelite Community) once again invites you to its Festival of Jewish Culture—including concerts, theatre performances, film screenings, lectures and the popular street festival.
The Festival of Jewish Culture 2019 kicks off on Tuesday, June 4, and will be held until June 25. The festival is a wonderful opportunity for visitors to enjoy a variety of concerts, theatre performances, film screenings, lectures as well as a street festival, one of the festival’s highlights for Oskar Deutsch, President of the IKG. In the following the Austrian newspaper “Heute” provides a summary of some of the most popular events.
Tuesday, June 4: Opening Concert
The opening concert by the Gabriele Coen Quintet takes place on Tuesday at 7.30 pm in the Haus der Musik (Vienna House of Music) under the motto ”Jewish Experience”. Five musicians enchant the audience with their saxophone and clarinet, piano, electric guitar, double bass and drums. The concert features Jewish music and jazz.
Thursday, 6 June: Theater Performance
At 7.30 pm a performance of the play “Primo” based on Primo Levis’ “If This is a Man” is given at the theatre in Walfischgasse, Vienna. Jacob Olesen performs the play directed by Enrico Carretta about a chemist and writer who joined the anti-fascist resistance in the fall of 1943. Memories of the Holocaust, racial laws as well as the persecution of Jews are the play’s main themes.
Wednesday, June 12: Concert
Music lovers get their money’s worth at the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna at 7.30 pm: Evelina Meghnagi, well-known for her performances in films such as “The Passion of Christ”, “The Princess of Montpensier” and “Ripley’s Game”, sings “Di Voce in Voce”. She is accompanied by a guitar, percussion and a bass. Her warm voice takes the audience on a fascinating journey through a mixture of languages, melodies and rhythms of contemporary and ancient music.
Sunday, June 16: Street Festival
The street festival—a fixture of the Jewish Culture Festival—takes place at Judenplatz from 3 pm to 9 pm with more than 40 associations and institutions present. The event is hosted by Tania Golden, visitors are welcomed at 3 pm. Along with a rich entertainment program for children, the festivals offers various stalls for shopping, culinary delights and good live music. Admission is free of charge.
