The movie „Transit“ is based on the eponymous novel by Anna Seghers, which was written during her time in exile in Marseille in 1941/1942.
Just in time before the German troops invade Paris, the young male protagonist manages to escape to Marseille. Using a fake identity, he eventually gets hold of life-saving documents that allow him to leave the country for good and flee to Europe. The setting of this ever-present story is based in Marseille where characters from the past meet refugees from the present. This way, history merges with the present and “all stories unite to form an eternal space of transit.” (Berlinale 2018).
