For some people the border to Switzerland was a gate to freedom during the Second World War but for most it was a deadly trap. After all, the Swiss authorities had already closed down the borders in the summer of 1938 especially for Jewish refugees - and often the attempts to escape between Lake of Constance and Silvretta had already failed on the side of Vorarlberg. Former Provincial Court President Alfons Dür has spent years working on some of the most devastating cases of that time and has reconstructed one of them extensively in his widely acclaimed book Unerhörter Mut.
