Early reflections of a Holocaust survivor who - in Yiddish and Polish - recounts the fate of a Jewish family: When the Germans occupied Poland in 1939, the Jelin family was first driven to the ghetto and then deported to Auschwitz. Their son David manages to escape from the deportation train, makes his way to the partisans and survives the war. He finds out about his father's death and his mother's disappearance. In Warsaw David meets Dora Berkowicz, who has lost her parents and is as desperate as he is. They leave Poland and end up in the American occupation zone in a camp for Displaced Persons. There they get married and even find David's lost mother, who survived the concentration camp and war. Together they hope to leave Germany and continue their lives in a separate Jewish nation.
