Hans Gamliel’s story is one of the few accounts of an “offspring of the Shoah,” starting with the earliest childhood memories of the three-year-old, whom his mother had given birth to while living as a “submarine” in 1940 in Yugoslavia, and continuing with the everyday perceptions of the growing boy. They hint at the misery of the surviving remigrants, left stateless through their flight, the unworthy living conditions in a homeless shelter, and the daily life of the child in post-war Vienna from 1945 onwards. From this perspective, Gamliel’s narrative is also an important piece of contemporary history, since it is not so often recounted in such a detailed and complex manner.
