The artist Fazal Sheikh (Zürich/New York/Kenia) in conversation with Hanno Loewy, in english language.

Fazal Sheikh was born 1965 in New York and lives as a photo artist in Zürich, New York and Kenia.For the exhibition “Say Schibbolet!” he put together (in 2011) a selection from his series "Desert Bloom" which deals with the forced "evacuation" of Bedouin in the Negev desert. Under the pretext of "to the blossom of the desert" villages and gardens were removed and replaced with afforestation which was suppossed to bild a green ring around Be'er Scheva. Fazal Sheikh works deal with the rootlessness and marginalisation of minorities around the world. Limits are changed by interfering with nature and then redefined - and represent both national and regional balance of power.

The work of Sheikh have been shown around the world at the Tate Modern in London, the Paris Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation, the Museum of contemporary art in Moscow and the International Center of photography in New York. Currently he focuses on his project "Exposure" with the planned destruction of the largest nature reserve of the USA in Utah because of oil production and fracking. An event in the accompanying program of the exhibition "Say Schibbolet!"
