Since 1951, Yom HaShoah has been celebrated in Israel on 27 Nissan in commemoration of the victims of the Shoah and the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Every year, Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem, organizes a memorial ceremony attended by members of the government. It also pays tribute to non-Jewish heroes who helped rescue Jews. Various programs are organized in schools and educational institutions to ensure that the memory of the Shoah is kept alive in younger generations as well. Sirens sound during the morning, and public life comes to a standstill for two minutes.

On the occasion of Yom HaShoah, we invite you to a commemoration ceremony at Dorotheergasse 11 at 5 p.m. on April 11, 2018. Together we will hold a minute of silence and afterwards, in the context of a tour through the museum, introduce you to selected objects and their (hi)stories, which offer multifaceted approaches to contemporary history and Austria’s difficult dealing with and accounting for Nazi crimes.
