Exhibition Musée d’art et d’histoire du Judaïsme, Paris in cooperation with the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna, 28 September 2016 – 29 January 2017
In cooperation with the Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna, the Musée d’art et d’histoire du Judaïsme in Paris (mahj.org) is presenting the exhibition “Arnold Schönberg – Peindre l’âme” from 28 September 2016 to 29 January 2017 featuring over 350 exhibits: paintings, drawings, documents, music manuscripts, letters and photographs.
The composer, painter, theorist and inventor Arnold Schönberg (1874 – 1951) has been called the greatest creative spirit of the 20th century. The exhibition sheds light particularly on his relatively short and intense period of painting, from 1908 to 1910.
Apart from the paintings, the show takes a particularly close look at Schönberg’s eventful life. Born a Jew, he converted to Protestantism in 1898, only to return to Judaism in Paris before fleeing to America in 1933; a section of the exhibit is devoted to his relationship with Judaism and his identity as a religious and political persona.
Another part of the exhibition is reserved for a selection of works by Schönberg’s contemporaries Vassily Kandinsky, Richard Gerstl, Egon Schiele and Max Oppenheimer.
The Arnold Schönberg Center is represented by 200 works on loan for this mega-show in Paris’ Marais quarter; other lenders include the Albertina, the Leopold Museum, mumok, the Belvedere Austrian Gallery, the Austrian National Library, Vienna University of Applied Arts, the Wien Museum, the Centre Pompidou, and the Jewish Museum Berlin.
Many accompanying events such as concerts, lectures, films and outreach programs will be augmenting the exhibition.
